Recently, staff at the women’s clinic had to write down their savings proposals on a board that was set up in the coffee room.
Now there is a new note in the same place: a price list of what medical supplies cost at the time of birth.
– I think it’s an indirect way of saying that we should save money, says Tove Broheden, midwife at the Södersjukhuset women’s clinic.
Aftonbladet previously reported that the Södersjukhuset (Sös) gynecology clinic in Stockholm will save SEK 72 million.
Recently, staff at the women’s clinic had to write down their savings proposals on a board that was set up in the coffee room.
Among other things, one person wrote that you can “remove the peppers” from the cheese sandwich.
– Being asked by our managers to brainstorm savings ideas is demeaning. We are talented and loyal employees who do what we are told. Since there is nothing to save on, we make very small changes, says Tove Broheden, midwife at the Sö Women’s Clinic.

Now, instead, there is a new note in the same place.
It is a price list of what the medical equipment costs at the time of birth.
– There are large and small things that are on the list, but we cannot save on materials when we have to provide a certain type of care, says Tove Broheden.

You cannot provide safe care
Tove Broheden doesn’t know who put in the new bill. She is also not sure what the purpose is.
– I think it is an indirect way of saying that we should save money. Many are very upset, it is so poor.
Savings requirements have left staff feeling abandoned.
– Those of us who work in childbirth cannot see how it should go. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE to save more money. We cannot carry out safe and dignified maternity care when we are asked to save on pain relievers, sheets and pads, says Tove Broheden.
– Suddenly we should not use so many sheets because the cost of washing is too high. We are told that we use too much foundation and bandages. And what is more serious, that some medical technology is too expensive, that some anesthesia is too expensive. We must constantly weigh what is really necessary.
And he says the situation has been under pressure for a long time. Even before the new savings requirements were introduced.
– Everything that could have been saved has already been removed. We are already taking risks with patient safety and it is very stressful. This applies not only to the gynecology clinic but also to other departments in the hospital.

“All clinics will be affected”
The appeal of Stockholm’s healthcare has also raised the question of savings requirements at the Sö women’s clinic on social media:
– The savings are an indirect consequence of the famine budget that the hospital has received from the regional directorate. Managers must stick to the budget, otherwise they risk their jobs. Lack of patient safety will further deteriorate, says Akil Awad, a specialist from Södersjukhuset and one of the founders of the Stockholm Health Care Call.
– Right now, the women’s clinic is focused, but all clinics will be affected by the savings.

“Patients should not be affected”
Maria Sjöstrand, Business Area Manager at Södersjukhuset Gynecology Clinic, answers Aftonbladet’s questions about savings in an email. She writes that the 72 million budget deficit is due to past mistakes.
“The error, which has now been rectified, meant that the clinic’s finances were reported incorrectly for a period. The measures that are planned are to improve flows and review the possibility of using our facilities in a more optimal way ”, he writes.
What do you tell staff who are concerned and alert about savings requirements?
“I understand that the financial situation raises concerns among employees and that is one of the reasons why I wanted to involve employees in the work of achieving a balanced economy.”
What consequences can this have for staff and patients?
“There are no plans to notify staff, but we are looking at how we can work more efficiently. All the measures with which we continue, we must implement them with maintained quality and patient safety, patients should not be affected by our financial situation ”.
Aftonbladet has submitted a request to the management of Södersjukhuset regarding the note in the coffee room with the costs of medical supplies during childbirth.
