Here’s Henrik Lundqvist’s new club on the quest for the Stanley Cup

“I feel like I have it in me, to drive a few years further. I know! So the question is what situation will it be in. That things will be as they have always been, it doesn’t work. I must be ready. It changes over time.”,

The words are from Henrik Lundqvist, and he said them at this summer’s GP when form was perfected for the Stanley Cup playoffs at Slottsskogsrinken in Gothenburg.

Since then, some water has flowed into the Hudson River in New York.

The Rangers had no chance in the playoffs, losing to the Carolina Hurricanes, and on September 30, the club announced that Henrik Lundqvist will be purchased from the remaining year of the contract.

Every once in a while the speculation really started.

What will be the next NHL destination, if there is one?

– It is not so easy for a stranger to sit and guess things. He is 38 years old and feels fresh. I hope he has hockey left, twin brother Joel said at Frölunda HC just over a week ago.

“Lundqvist: a very perfect alternative”

A few days ago, the 2018 champions Washington Capitals emerged as the main stakeholders in Henrik Lundqvist’s signing of a contract.

– We are looking for a veteran who can be a substitute goalkeeper for us. Henrik Lundqvist is a perfect alternative, Capital CEO Brian MacLellan told the Washington Post.

Lundqvist had that role last year with the Rangers, and he didn’t always enjoy it.

He wants to play, not sit and watch.

– I think I thought a lot about my situation. I went through a period with something that I had never experienced before in my career. My role changed so drastically, so fast. And if you are a competitive person who wants to play, who wants to comply … and is content to sit on the bench, yes, then I don’t know if you are in the right place. Then you can make the best of it, be positive and supportive, and I tried. The best I could, Henrik said this summer.

Now Lundqvist will have a similar role in Washington Capitals, where 23-year-old Russian Ilya Samsonov is the first character when and if the NHL season begins as planned on January 1, 2021.

Although the difference this time is simple:

Lundqvist himself hinted a few days ago that it could be the Washington Capitals.

The club has an online hashtag with ALLCAPS … only capital letters, and when the 38-year-old goalkeeper icon finished a tweet, he used capital letters in the word WIN.

Thoughtful, or not? Regardless, the tweet sparked expectations and speculation, and when the transfer window for everyone without a club opened on Friday night Swedish time … well, it wasn’t long before the news was confirmed by various sources in North America.

A moment later, the Capitals club also came out with the news.

The contract with Capitals is signed over the course of one season and gives Henrik Lundqvist $ 1.5 million from Washington. He already received the remaining three million dollars when the New York Rangers bought him, and thus the goalkeeper reaches his expected salary of 4.5 million dollars.

That’s just over 39.6 million SEK and a chance to win that title that is missing from his hockey career.

In Capitals, for example, there is Russian superstar Alexander Ovetjkin, the player who during the NHL career scored the most goals in Lundqvist, plus Swede Nicklas Bäckström, who played up to most Russian NHL goals.

With the move to Capitals, the Lundqvist family will not have to move from their home to Tribeca, Manhattan. Since the flight between New York and Washington is only one hour, Ms. Therese can continue to work with the charitable Henrik Lundqvist Foundation in New York, and daughters Charlise and Juli can stay in school in Manhattan.
