The Uppsala region became the first in the country with special local councils from the Public Health Agency. In the last seven days, 326 new cases have been confirmed.
– A few weeks ago we saw a dramatic development with increases of one hundred percent between the seven-day periods. Now that increase has slowed down, which is gratifying. At the same time, we still haven’t seen infection numbers go down, says Anna Gillman, an assistant infection control physician.
Initially, the spread of the infection spread among people aged 20 to 29 and later reached all age groups.
– The spread of infection does not only apply to specific situations, environments or workplaces. Here it is a more general spread in society, he says.
The regions with the highest spread of infection per capita are Uppsala, Örebro, Jämtland-Härjedalen, Östergötland, Jönköping and Stockholm, according to the latest status report from the Swedish Public Health Agency. Skåne has also seen a large increase in the number of cases.

In the Östergötland region, there are 530 new cases seen over the last seven-day period – a gradual but steep rise, according to infection control doctor Britt Åkerlind.
– Today, positive test results are around twelve percent, compared with one percent in September. It has started in classic clusters: in sports, in the university and in various public administrations. Now we see a basic infection in the population, he says and continues:
– This is one of the scenarios we had imagined. The prevalence of the virus in society is once again higher. This may be due to the fact that meetings increase after the summer, in schools and in workplaces. However, we do not know how the curve will develop.
The Jönköping region has been located the greatest spread of the infection mainly to the municipality of Värnamo. Assistant infection control physician David Edenvik also notes that part of the increase is due to increased sampling.
– If we compare the number of samples with other regions, we are considerably higher, which to some extent explains our figures, although we also have problems.
However, he does not see signs of a general spread of the infection, but emphasizes that these are local outbreaks with clear links to specific age groups.
– These are youth environments: schools and sports clubs. We’ve had a couple of outbreaks in nursing homes, but it’s not at all overbearing in the same way it was last spring. In this way, the danger is not so great. Nor have we seen any new deaths in our region.
You can also in the Örebro region relate in part the greater spread of infection to younger people. Last week, the number of cases doubled, from just under 350 to 600.
In short, it is contagion in situations where people have been close to each other, such as parties, sports activities, at work, or work-related social activities. We also see the infection spread among students and cases among children. Part of the increase is also explained by the increase in samples and cases discovered in connection with infection monitoring, “writes infection control physician Gunlög Rasmussen in an email to DN.
In Jämtland-Härjedalen you have The sharp rise slowed slightly over the past week, with 86 new confirmed cases.
– The increase here was very dramatic. In week 37 we had 9 cases in one week. This doubled almost every week, to 124 cases in week 41. After that, it has slowly decreased. It is clear that we are concerned, says Micael Widerström, infection control doctor in the region.
He believes they have identified groups where the infection began to spread, mainly on various holidays, but is now a widespread infection. At the same time, a slowdown can be seen: the proportion of positive test results is around one percent, compared to 3.4 percent when the number of cases was higher.
– It went down quickly again. Or we’ve done a good thing with intensive infection monitoring, extensive sampling, and a home quarantine. Or there are other reasons, such as that many are in their mountain cabins or elsewhere, says Widerström.
In the Skåne Region, the number of cases last week, 1,320, almost double that of the previous week. All age groups are affected, but the highest proportion of new infections is in the 20-29 age group. On Tuesday, stricter local restrictions were imposed in the region to limit the spread of the infection.
Infection tracking is heavily loaded and infection control doctor Eva Melander thinks they should pull the emergency brake.
– Everyone must take responsibility. We must help reduce the risk of spreading the infection, he told a news conference on Tuesday.
