When the five-year-old left school, the police were alerted.
The body cameras reveal how two policemen barked and yelled at the boy, handcuffed him and threatened to beat him.
Now anger grows over the decision to keep their jobs.
The intervention was performed in Silver Spring, Maryland, on January 14, 2020, but it has only now become known. On Friday, Montgomery County Police released body camera photos of the two officers.
The films show how the boy is threatened and subjected to a prolonged and strong insult when the police, a man and a woman, lead him back to school.
Among other things, they call it “beast” and “violent little thing.”
The child is forced to sit on a chair and cries incessantly.
– Stop that noise. I hope your mother lets me hit you, the police say.
Scream the boy straight to my face
The child continues crying. Finally, the policewoman loses her patience.
The film shows how she, five times, screams as much as she can, directly in the child’s face at a distance of a few centimeters.
The school staff is in the classroom. An employee shows the police a video in which the boy is said to be disorderly in a classroom.
When the mother of the five-year-old shows up, she tells the police that she usually slaps him at home, but that she can’t raise him “how she wants” because she doesn’t want to end up in jail.
– We think the opposite is true, says the male police officer.
– Yes, we want you to hit him, says his colleague.
The five-year-old boy received handcuffs.
The police lock his hand in handcuffs for a minute.
– Do you know what they are for? For people who do not want to listen and do not know how to behave, says the policeman.
The woman takes over and starts talking to the boy about his mother:
– I hope I really beat you when you get home. You deserve it so much after what you’ve done today. You were horrible.
The police can keep their jobs.
The mother has now sued the police and the municipality in court. Police officers have been investigated internally but are allowed to keep their jobs, the Washington Post reports.
Lawsuits are now being raised for that decision to be reversed. A collection of digital names has been started and several local politicians have expressed their displeasure.
– This was a system error. He knew what he was going to see, but it was worse than that. I didn’t find out until the lawsuit was filed in January (2021). No one had told us anything, not the police, not the school. It’s another accident, Council Member Will Jawando told NBC.
He agrees with the demands that the police be fired:
– You don’t deserve the public’s trust if you have such bad judgment.
Attorney Matthew Bennett, who represents the boy and his mother, told the Washington Post that the five-year-old is receiving professional treatment after the police intervention.
– He has nightmares. Now he is afraid of the police.
Neither the police nor the school have commented on the incident, referring to the fact that the legal process is ongoing.
