Icebergs are continually being shed from Antarctica, both from climate change and more natural causes. However, they are not usually as big as the iceberg that was released last Friday.
The iceberg that has now broken off from Antarctica is estimated to be just over 1,270 square kilometers. the corresponds to the size of the entire municipality of Hässleholm or the size of New York City.
According to the researchers, it is not climate change that is behind the event, but in this case they are completely natural causes.
“Unusual and exciting”
Adrian luckman, a geology professor at the University of Swansea in Wales, predicted that the iceberg would soon be released from Antarctica and emphasized how unusual it is for such large icebergs to be released.
– Although it is completely normal for parts of Antarctica to come loose, it is quite unusual and exciting with icebergs so big which is released, Luckman tells the BBC and continues:
– Time will tell if this will cause more pieces to be released in the coming days and weeks.
