The number of confirmed infections is increasing and several hospitals are fully booked by Christmas.
The government and the Swedish Public Health Agency have introduced a series of new restrictions to stop the infection.
– The next necessary step is to close Sweden now, says Fredrik Elgh, professor of virology at Umeå University.
– We have to do much more than we do now. Many European countries have shut down many activities and managed to reverse the trend, but neither the Swedish Public Health Agency nor the government seem to have realized that the spread of the infection influences the style of what others do.

Sweden received a lot of attention when the king commented critically on Sweden’s strategy earlier this week, where he felt that Sweden had failed. Several world media mention it in relation to the new restrictions.
“Sweden has been the only country in Europe that has resisted a formal shutdown during the first and second waves, and the latest measures bring (the country) closer to having introduced a de facto shutdown of much of society,” he writes Financial times.
The Sydney Morning Herald follows the same path, noting that “a record number of new cases almost every week for the past two months has forced the government to do more.”
France’s France 24 says Sweden is making a 180-degree turn from its “controversial strategy” and the BBC claims Sweden has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Scandinavia.
Two out of five have antibodies
The spread of infection in Stockholm has increased, with the amount of antibodies, reports Svenska Dagbladet. According to the newspaper, almost two in five Stockholm residents have been tested for antibodies to the virus.
Elda Sparrelid, chief physician for the Stockholm region, says the increase is likely due to the wave of infections this fall.
– In all likelihood, it is the result of the fact that there has been a great spread of the infection and that more people have had covid-19, he tells SvD.
In the Stockholm region, residents can undergo antibody tests twice for free. After that, a consultation with the health service is required before a possible third test, but several private providers offer antibody tests at a cost.
