Here are new words we got used to this year. Zoom bombing, the two meter rule, simp and pouch bag

The Language Council and Språktidningen have published this year’s so-called “new word list”, a list of Swedish words that have been invented or become more common over the past year.

Typically, the New Earth list contains many technology-related terms. This year, however, they have been somewhat left behind in favor of more new words related to health and care. These include, for example, “Corona Adaptation”, “Corona Salute”, “Amateur Epidemiologist”, “Immunity Session”, “Cluster Infection”, “R Number” and “Super Spreader”.

The only tech-related words on this year’s new word list are actually “Mjuta”, meaning mute the sound from the microphone, and “Zoom bombing.” These words can even be said to be the result of the ongoing pandemic, I suppose.

You will find all the “new” words in this year’s Nyordlista in the data box below, and a more detailed description of what they mean is at the link below. You can also listen below as Ola Karlsson from the Swedish Language Council and Anders Svensson from the Swedish Language Magazine talk about the 2020 New World list and the impact of the pandemic on the language.
