Henrik Lundqvist is said to have told his teammates that he played his last game for the New York Rangers.
After the loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, he said goodbye in the locker room.
– It was very sad, Libor Hajek tells the Czech media.
It was on August 5 that the New York Rangers ended the season after three straight losses against the Carolina Hurricanes in Toronto.
Henrik Lundqvist has previously been the face of the club to the outside world and the player who spoke for the team in the media, but after that match, Henrik Lundqvist has not said anything.
The 38-year-old goalkeeper went home to his family on the west coast of Sweden, but now the whole family has returned to New York because the children have started school.
“Hard for him”
Czech defender Libor Hajek, 22, was with the New York Rangers in Toronto and now recounts what happened in the locker room after the last game of the season.
– It was very sad. After the last game against the Carolina Hurricanes, Henrik Lundqvist then saluted, saying it was his last game. He said he didn’t know what would happen to him, if the New York Rangers would buy him and if he would go to another club. It was difficult for him, Libor Hajek tells isport.cz.
“Best hockey player”
The Swedish legend is clearly a role model for the Czech player.
– He’s a great warrior. The best hockey player I’ve ever met when it comes to attitude, training, and compassion. I even bought the same jeans he had to look like him, says Libor Hajek.
Henrik Lundqvist has one year left on his contract with the New York Rangers, but Alexandar Georgiyev and Igor Shestyorkin have surpassed him in goal.
With goalkeepers like Marc-Andre Fleury, Matt Murray and Darcy Kuemper on the market, the New York Rangers will have a hard time landing a trade with Henrik Lundqvist, so there’s a lot to suggest they buy him.
Swedish goalkeepers Jacob Markström and Robin Lehner are expected to extend with the Vancouver Canucks and Vegas Golden Knights respectively.
Libor Hajek is loaned to Olomouc in the Czech league early next season.
