NEW YORK. He has had plenty of time to think about the future, and in the end Henrik Lundqvist concluded that the dream of winning the Stanley Cup still burns with unmatched strength in his chest.
Thus, the greatest Swedish goalkeeping career in history now continues in Washington.
– I am very charged with this new chapter in life. It will be a lot of fun to play with capitals, “King Henrik” tells Sportbladet.
From the outside, the changes in Henrik Lundqvist’s life may appear to have occurred at breakneck speed.
It’s been just over a week since, after fifteen glorious seasons, it was bought by the New York Rangers, and now it’s ready for the Washington Capitals.
But in fact, it has been a long process.
– Yes, this was not something that happened overnight. “I’ve had a lot of time to process and think,” the 38-year-old star tells Sportbladet.
– Already this spring, I understood that he was leaning in this direction and for two or three months I have definitely known it. It has been a process, you go through many phases in such a big separation and in the end I just landed in gratitude during the fifteen years in New York. It has been an absolutely fantastic experience.
“Unbelievably fun to play hockey”
“Henke” also came to the conclusion fairly quickly that he wants to keep playing hockey and pursue the dream of the Stanley Cup.
– I’ve had time to think about it too and yes… as I recently wrote on social media, I still think it’s incredibly fun to play hockey and I want to keep competing.
So there wasn’t much to think about when the Washington Capitals contract offer came in.
– We also looked at other clubs, and those were good alternatives, but Capitals considered the right decision, he continues.
– I have played a lot against them and I know they are a very good team. Also, I have only heard good things about the club and now I have had rewarding conversations with several in the club, including the general manager and the coach and “Bäckis”.
Especially:
They want, and can, win the Stanley Cup.
– Yes, in this part of my career, of course, it is the most important factor for me. People also think a bit about practical things, but above all I want to get involved and fight for the Stanley Cup.
– Capitals has already won once and knows what it takes to do it again. The capacity is there, it is very inspiring.
Family can stay in New York
No one knows exactly when the next season will begin, due to the pandemic, and therefore Henrik has not yet made any decisions on when the family will move to the American capital.
– No, we take it as it comes. I’m going there, but we’ll see how the rest of the family does. Right now the kids are going to school in New York, so like I said, we’ll take it as it comes.
Henrik himself is currently in Stockholm, among other things for a charity gala on Sunday, but will soon return to America again, and then, for the first time in fifteen years, he is not a target of the New York Rangers.
– As I said, I am just grateful for my time in New York and also for all the love and support I have received recently. But now that I’m really loaded into playing with Capitals, it will be incredibly fun to start this new chapter in life.
