Henrik Lundqvist, 38, does not intend to play a secondary role.

He will try to steal Ilya Samsonov’s job, says NHL expert Dan Rosen.

– Henke joins the team as an assassin, says Rosen.

Henrik Lundqvist was outmatched in competition at the New York Rangers and had to leave after 15 seasons at the club. The club’s new management is division rival Washington Capitals, whose first planned goalkeeper is 23-year-old Ilya Samsonov.

But NHL pundit Dan Rosen doesn’t think Lundqvist is content to act as a back-up for the young Russian.

“No mentor”

He is convinced that the Swede is there to steal Samsonov’s work.

– That’s Henke. He arrives there as, for lack of a better word, a murderer. He comes there to play and win, Rosen says according to NBC.

It doesn’t buy the talk that Lundqvist has been chosen to act as a “mentor” to Samsonov.

– Henke is not a mentor. I’ve heard a lot about it, that Henke would act as a kind of mentor to Samsonov. Answer no, says Rosen.

Want to win

When Sportbladet spoke to Lundqvist about the club change, the 38-year-old said that one of the main reasons he chose Capitals was the opportunity to win a Stanley Cup.

– Yes, in this part of my career, of course, it is the most important factor for me. People also think a bit about practical things, but above all I want to get involved and fight for the Stanley Cup. Capitals has won once before and knows what it takes to do it again. The ability is there, it’s very inspiring, Henke said.
