Healthcare concerns, but Skåne is better equipped than last spring

Despite the increase in infection, only a handful of covid patients still receive vat care in Skåne. It is one of the things that separates the boom of autumn from the chaotic situation of this spring. Healthcare in Skåne is also much better equipped.

This spring, a special covid-iva ward was opened at Sus in Malmö, where the most seriously ill were treated. VAT attention in Skåne is now concentrated in Malmö and Lund, but the usual locations are considered sufficient.Image: Johan Bävman

– We have a lot of protective equipment and medicines, the anesthetic that was in short supply this spring. We have learned much more about the virus, says Pia Lundbom, director of health and medical care in the Skåne region.

On Tuesday, Skåne became the second region in Sweden with “local restrictions” – more stringent recommendations than the rest of the country.

By then, the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in just a few weeks had risen from 23 to 55, roughly half the peak in May. Yesterday, five patients were in the intensive care unit, compared with a high of 24 this spring.

Here are some other differences from this spring:

Virus testing is much more extensive. They are tested ten more times.

Until July, tests were only carried out on seriously ill people admitted to the hospital, as well as on care and nursing staff. On average 2,000-3,000 per week.

Now anyone with mild symptoms can take a virus test, from a week or so even those who end up in “home quarantine.” Last week, more than 23,000 people were tested, and many are found to be barely aware of the disease.

Therefore, the number of new cases each day may be due to coincidences. It is the number of seriously ill people that shows the severity, if the infection is widespread and has reached the elderly and other risk groups.

– We don’t see that influx to hospitals now. Although we are concerned about the increase in infection, it is not developing this spring, says Pia Lundbom.

Intensive care knows more about how covid patients can be treated.

– Today, covid patients are part of intensive care and VAT doctors all over Sweden exchange experiences, says Pia Lundbom.

Some lessons learned are the administration of medications for blood clots and for an overactive immune system and when and how respiratory care benefits the patient.

Region Skåne hopes that the existing vat locations and vat staff will be sufficient.

There are normally around 65 IVA places in Skåne’s five emergency hospitals. That capacity was actually increased this spring, with a field hospital in Helsingborg and additional staff waiting for a tidal wave that never made it here. The field hospital was never necessary.

– Now the load has increased again, but from a very low level. There are currently no plans to recover special covid-iva departments. But of course we follow him, says Pia Lundbom.

Iva’s patients in Skåne are concentrated in Sus in Malmö and Lund.

– Helsingborg and Kristianstad took more covid-iva patients this spring. Now we say that they should be prepared for that, but the main objective is to have them in Malmö and Lund, says Pia Lundbom.

This spring, they did not want to transfer seriously ill patients between hospitals. With more knowledge about covid-19, it is possible, according to Pia Lundbom.

– We’ve gotten better at identifying when patients start to get seriously ill, then you can transport them earlier and at a calmer stage.

Its has a total of 48 seats VAT. In Helsingborg (7 IVA sites), Kristianstad (7 sites) and Ystad (3 sites), intensive care units will be transferred to other patients when planned operations have started.

Planned care must continue.

The so-called “care hump” has the highest priority. More than 6,000 operations were canceled this spring in the Skåne region and must be grazed, unless a new wave of corona gobbles up the resources.

This is the great danger that Pia Lundbom sees right now.

– If the people of Skåne do not take care of themselves in daily life, it is a great risk for all the patients who could not receive their care this spring. Therefore, everyone should consider their responsibility to prevent the spread of infection!
