A man was brutally murdered in Västerås earlier this year. Now it is up to the Supreme Court (HD) to decide what punishment his murderer will receive.

In February, the victim was stabbed to death by a 46-year-old man. He admitted that he had cut the other in the throat, but said he had no intention of killing him.

The 46-year-old was sentenced to life in prison in district court. But the Court of Appeal determined that extenuating circumstances existed and sentenced him to 18 years in prison.

The Public Prosecutor (RÅ) appealed the judgment of the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court. RÅ wants the sentence to be set at life in prison, referring to the stricter criminal provisions for murder that were introduced on January 1 this year.

– We want HD to clarify how to apply this new provision, My Hedström, head of the Public Ministry office, told TT in September.

HD has now decided to grant permission to appeal, various news outlets write.
