When gay men got hold of the far-right group’s “Proud Boys” hashtag on Sunday, it was to spread joy, according to Englishman Matt Dechaine. He is one of those who chose to share a photo of himself with his husband.

– Seeing the hashtag was so uplifting, Matt Dechaine told CNN and continues:

– It seems that the movement for positive change for all is gaining momentum all the time and I am happy to be a part of it. By coming together with mutual respect and love as a foundation, the world can become much better.

“It is not offensive to us”

One of the leaders of “Proud Boys”, Enrique Tarrio, does not seem too provoked by the campaign and says that he does not understand what the men are trying to achieve.

– I think it’s fun. This is not something that offends us. This is not an insult. We are not homophobic. We don’t care who people are with. People think this is going to upset us. Not so, Enrique Tarrio tells CNN.

During the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, the acting president was pressured by the far-right group “Proud Boys.” He was asked to distance himself from them, but the response has sparked criticism and debate in the United States, as he instead urged the group to “back off and stay out of it.” An answer that also led to ambiguities about what he really meant.

Ideology

President Trump later said in an interview with Fox News that he does not know who the Proud Boys are. According to the FBI, the “Proud boys” are a far-right group with ties to white power nationalists. The American organization “Law against defamation” calls the ideology of the “Proud Boys” “misogynistic, Islamophobic, transphobic and anti-immigration.”
