Renowned Russian historian Yuri Dmitriev has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for alleged sexual abuse of his adopted daughter.

The historian is best known for having discovered and mapped mass graves from the Stalin era, graves with thousands of bodies in the forests of Sandarmokh in northwestern Russia.

The trial has been widely criticized and Dmitriyev’s lawyer says the case was fabricated to punish him for his work documenting the graves. In July, he was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison, a sentence that is now getting tougher.

The EU has disputed the allegations, which commentators say are politically motivated. Since Dmitriyev was first arrested in 2016 on child pornography charges, human rights organizations have demanded his release.

The 64-year-old man denies the allegations.
