Eva Sundman is Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director at Remeo in the Sköndal district of Stockholm. The clinic is the only one highly specialized in intensive care-related rehabilitation in Sweden.

– We receive most patients directly from intensive care and many receive continuous ventilation treatment when they arrive. The first step is to practice breathing to remove the ventilator, but it is often also necessary to train the entire body at the same time so that the patient can breathe alone, says Eva Sundman.

It is also quite common for the patient to not cough properly, which is due to the fact that the respiratory muscles are weak as there is an altered sensation of the airways after illness and treatment with a respirator or respirator, as well as they are called.

– If you have had an airway infection, such as covid-19, you may have a large amount of mucus in your airways that you need to cough. Therefore, it is important to regain the power to cough, but also to feel when you need to cough, says Eva Sundman.

Rehabilitation also includes swallowing and muscle training to stand, sit, and balance.

– Everything is related and if you have been seriously ill for a long time, you need inter-professional rehabilitation at the same time with advanced medical attention. This does not apply to all patients, but especially to those who are most affected. Typically, it’s about five percent of intensive care patients, says Eva Sundman.

She says that the group of patients most affected may be permanent but.

– If you have had ARDS, it is not uncommon for the lungs to become scarred later, and then oxygenation can be difficult. This may mean that oxygen treatment is needed for quite some time, “says Eva Sundman.

It can also lead the patient not to recover the same condition as before the disease.

Other patients may experience so-called VAT confusion and have difficulty distinguishing between dream and reality or even fewer hallucinations.

– It usually happens pretty fast. But there are also cognitive disorders that can last longer; Concentration difficulties, difficulties in maintaining attention and memory disorders, which can make it difficult to manage a job, says Eva Sundman.

Some older people may end up in a dementia-like condition and others may have emotional problems like anxiety, anxiety, depression.

– It can also affect younger people, says Eva Sundman.

The most affected patients may need four to eight weeks of rehabilitation and sometimes even more.

– The hardest hit may take months, and sometimes even longer, to recover, says Eva Sundman.
