The Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate, IVO, submitted a full review earlier this week.
The review showed, among other things, that about 20 percent of 847 patients did not receive an individual medical evaluation. The vast majority of medical examinations were also carried out by telephone. Only between five and seven percent were allowed to see a doctor.
Deficiencies across the country
IVO has also criticized almost all regions for not following regulations that apply to end-of-life care.
– Nursing home staff are used to meeting people and family members when it comes to end-of-life care. But they must know what the conditions are. “Is this the end of life? And in what way should we relieve and find relatives? ”. So they need doctors and other health personnel to participate in this, says Lena Hallengren.
What went wrong? What needs to be fixed?
– If it had been in all activities everywhere, it would definitely have been a system error, but my image is not that it is in every home. There are shortages everywhere, in all regions, but not in 1,700 households.
No, but 1,700 households have not been surveyed either. Is there a problem with the system?
– Something is wrong, I can’t say more, says Lena Hallengren.
“Historic health scandal”
The management of the elderly during the corona pandemic has been called, among other things, “a Swedish accident” and “a historic health scandal” on the editorial pages of newspapers.
At present, the Minister of Social Affairs cannot answer what kind of changes should be made. In some cases, it has been discussed whether there is a lack of medical knowledge among nursing home staff or whether it may be a matter of system errors.
Several of the points in the IVO report are about how people have simply broken the law. How much will it cost to those who have provided care in this way?
– If you don’t correct your deficiencies, IVO has several tools to use when it comes to fines, for example, responds Lena Hallengren.
The Minister of Social Affairs now awaits the improvement measures that the regions must report no later than January 15 next year, but due to the IVO revision.
