Around half a million chickens will be slaughtered on a farm in the municipality of Mönsterås after bird flu was found at the facility. The Swedish Board of Agriculture brings in about 30 National Guard soldiers to help, local media report.
– We received a request from the Swedish Board of Agriculture for support with the staff. We have said yes, and our concrete task is to package the birds after killing and put them in containers for later transport, says Jan Bohman, communications manager in the southern military region, to SVT Nyheter Småland.
The Kalmar County facility is the fifth affected by bird flu this season. All the above cases have been found in Skåne.
The virus is highly contagious among birds, but for humans the risk of infection is considered to be largely non-existent.
