Gröna Lund on the brink of bankruptcy if park cannot open in 2021

Last spring, the government introduced a restriction that no more than 50 people could be at public gatherings and public events. And during the summer, it was decided that amusement parks would be no exception, which was discussed for the first time.

What applies for the 2021 season is still unclear and bothers Gröna Lund’s management. Magnus Widell, CEO of Gröna Lund, tells Dagens Nyheter that the park management has been fighting for more than six months to be informed of what will apply.

1,000 employees allowed to leave

When the park learned last spring that it would not be possible to open the 2020 season, the around 1,000 people who were already employed at the time also had to leave the company.

Magnus Widell says that if they are going to open Grona Lund this summer, they should park and be briefed now on what to do.

– We must start our recruitment and planning in December if we want to be able to open in April. Typically we employ 1,500 people per season, it takes time to find people and train them, he tells Dagens Nyheter.

Can handle the audience

He also believes that Gröna Lund could handle the audience and keep it safe since the amusement park is fenced and it is possible to decide how many guests will enter.

“Throughout the amusement park, in our restaurants, in our games and attractions, we already have clear plans and measures on how to follow the guidelines of the Public Health Agency, so it is not about the risk of infection,” he said Magnus Widell to DN.

If the park cannot open until next season, the company is close to bankruptcy.

Sweden is the only EU member state where parks were completely closed under the International Association of Amusement Parks, IAAPA.

But parks that have animals and don’t have rides and things like that, like Kolmården and Furuvik, may be open because they lack what are called “rides” in the regulations.
