Photographs from Trier show a city center full of people, wearing mouth guards, standing together in silence. The demonstration in the city takes place less than 24 hours after the event that the mayor of the city, Wolfram Leibe, described as “the worst to hit Trier since World War II”.
On Wednesday an interrogation was carried out with the 51-year-old man suspected of murdering five people and injuring 18. According to the police, the man’s description of what happened was difficult to understand. No clear motive has been identified.

The man was under the influence of alcohol. in writing. During and after the arrest, he behaved differently, police say. The 51-year-old must have received prior care for mental problems. Now he will undergo a forensic psychiatric investigation.
The act has led the German media to question whether the city center of Trier has been adequately protected. The minister responsible for the Interior in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Roger Lewentz, told the Deutschlandfunk radio channel that the act could not be avoided.
– It is not possible to create 100% protection that prevents a car from being used as a murder weapon, he says.
