Gretzky’s collector’s card set a new hockey record

A trade card for the Canadian legend from his first NHL season sold for $ 1.29 million, equivalent to nearly 11 million crowns, when it was sold at an online auction on Friday. This is the first time that a collectible ice hockey card has sold for more than a million dollars.

The card in question is said to be in top condition and was part of the Canadian confectionery and trading card company O-Pee-Chees rookie collection for the 1979-1980 season.

The anonymous seller did a nice trick on the card. He bought the card at a similar auction four years ago and then paid “only” $ 465,000, or less than half the current amount.

Wayne Gretzky played a total of 20 seasons in the NHL. He won the Stanley Cup four times and was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) nine times and won the points league ten times. His total of 2,857 points is almost a thousand points more than second all-time Jaromir Jagr.

Gretzky may be great at ice hockey, but in the sports world in general, his trading card lags a bit with the actual record numbers.

In July, a basketball player LeBron James rookie card sold for $ 1.8 million, and in August a new record was set when a baseball player Mike Trout card sold for $ 3.93 million, equivalent to $ 33.3 million.
