At the same time that the Paris Agreement turns five, a digital climate meeting will take place on Saturday.
Climate Ambition Summit 2020 is led by the UN, France and the United Kingdom. There, participants will prepare for COP26 and show what steps they have taken to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Greta Thunberg’s critique
Climate activist Greta Thunberg describes everything as a castle in the air. He directs strong criticism of world leaders at the meeting through his Twitter:
“At the Climate Action Summit, leaders celebrate their shameless loopholes, empty words, distant and inadequate goals, and theft of current and future living conditions, and call it “ambition.” There are no climate leaders. The only ones who can change this are you and me. Together“, She writes.
The post also includes a video where Greta Thunberg addresses the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement. He notes that not enough is being done to achieve the goal of keeping global warming well below two degrees.
– The gap between what we have to do and what is done is growing. We are still accelerating in the wrong direction.
This is the Paris Agreement
On December 12, 2015, a historic agreement was signed. During the UN climate summit in Paris, 196 countries decided to work together on climate change. In total, there are three goals:
• Reduce the global temperature rise to well below two degrees Celsius, with a hope of 1.5 degrees.
• That adaptability and resilience to climate change be promoted.
• That financial flows must be combined with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development.
