Climate activist Greta Thunberg visited DN on Tuesday to give a lecture on her point of view on climate reports. She delivered a somewhat scathing review.
The media write about the melting of glaciers, the melting of permafrost and the death of forests. But these are just symptoms of the climate crisis, which is something else entirely, he says.
– You basically never write about it.
According to Thunberg, shopping The current climate crisis is almost one thing: time. She likens it to what it would be like if the Coast Guard waited to go out and rescue a passenger ferry because it was raining and blowing too much.
– If we ignore the temporal aspect of the climate crisis, we can continue as now, because in that case we can solve the problems later.
To truly understand the climate crisis, one must explain how carbon dioxide budgets work, something she has never seen in a news context, she says.
– It’s like explaining economics without mentioning currencies, budgets, the stock market or interest rates. In other words, it is completely absurd.
Thunberg states that the media are very bad at explaining these kinds of things to their audiences.
– You have never explained the climate crisis, you have reported on climate change, on the symptoms of the climate crisis, on climate activists with braids and yellow waterproof jackets saying awkward and clickable quotes.
It emphasizes that the media are the last hope of the climate, that they are in charge of informing people about how alarming the situation is. At the same time, it is difficult for him to answer what specific things he would like to read more about, but he believes that the climate crisis must permeate the entire report.
– Today is treated as a curiosity.
Thunberg also believes that the report focuses too much on itself.
– If it’s a tool to generate interest and raise awareness, that’s good I suppose, but sometimes it gets a little silly how to focus on people and climate activists instead of the climate crisis.
The climate activist says she almost stopped doing interviews today because she wants to encourage the media to write about other things.
– But it doesn’t seem to have taken off, he says and laughs.
DN has during the fall invited several people to give lectures on the climate crisis and journalism. Later this year, Professor Johan Rockström and The Guardian climate editor Damian Carrington will appear.
