Greece and Turkey are in talks to reduce the infected conflict in the Mediterranean, says NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg.
That is not true, Greece responds.
“The fact that Greece and Turkey have agreed to hold the so-called technical talks to ease tensions in the eastern Mediterranean does not correspond to reality,” said a statement from the Greek Foreign Ministry.
The NATO countries disagree on how the boundaries of their respective economic zones should be drawn in the Mediterranean, where the gas deposits are located. Both sides have warships in the region and the situation has been described as “critical” by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
Germany has been pushing diplomatically for a broader dialogue between the countries, and Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a video conference on Thursday.
