Applause outside of court when Magda Fyssas spread her hands following the verdict, which establishes that the Golden Dawn member who was charged with the murder of her son, rapper Pavlos Fyssas, is guilty.
The verdict was awaited, as well as the convictions against the members accused of attacks on migrants and trade unionists.
But the big question today it was all about the Golden Dawn is considered a criminal organization. The court’s answer was yes: the party leadership, including the leader Nikos Michaloliakos, is found guilty of running a criminal organization.
This opens the door to condemn the party leadership for its involvement in the assassination of Fyssas and for other acts of violence perpetrated by the rank and file of the party while the party leaders sat in the Greek parliament.
The verdict is considered unique and the trial is one of the most remarkable in modern Greek history. Charges have been brought against a total of 68 party members.
Tens of thousands gathered in the streets awaiting the verdict, and when the news came, applause broke out, but also riots where the police responded with tear gas.
The punishment will be determined later, but for the party leaders it is likely to be many years in prison.
