Yoshihide Suga on Wednesday, during his first press conference as the newly elected prime minister.
Japan’s new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is off to a good start. At least in opinion polls.
Suga, who was elected as the country’s new political leader in parliament on Wednesday, has strong support from the population.
Nearly two-thirds of Japanese, or 66.4 percent, give the go-ahead to the prime minister and his government, according to a survey by Kyodo News. And they are given even higher popularity figures in an opinion poll conducted for the Nikkei newspaper and the television company TV Tokyo, where Suga’s government receives the support of 74 percent of those surveyed.
Now it only remains for Suga to take on the two main challenges for the country: the corona pandemic and the lame economy.
– These are the first issues I have to address, says Suga, who replaces party colleague Shinzo Abe, who announced his resignation in August with reference to deteriorating health.
