A regional meeting has just ended to assess how to continue handling the accident. The meeting included staff from the Greater Gothenburg Rescue Service, the Greater Gothenburg Police, the health service, a regional emergency preparedness officer for civil protection and emergency preparedness, as well as representatives from the affected municipalities of Gothenburg and Partille.

Earlier this morning, the regional official who was on standby at the civil protection unit and on standby contacted Contact Närhälsan and made recommendations on which health facilities could be affected if the derailed freight car nonetheless proves have a leak.

Until twelve o’clock, the four health centers Torpavallen, Gamlestan, Björkekärr and Olskroken and rehabilitation in Gamlestan and Olskroken did not accept patients, for safety reasons. However, the staff remained ready to intervene in case the worst happened.

The National Dental Service clinics in the area should also have been closed, according to information that has not been confirmed so far.

New decisions

All health centers are located within a radius of two kilometers from the scene of the accident. The region’s rescue service and social protection and emergency preparedness have debated whether roadblocks should extend to just two kilometers in case of some form of intervention (read: rescue, etc.) that may increase the risk of leaks and therefore the risk of explosion.

But shortly before noon, it was decided to reopen all health centers except Torpavallen and the Munkebäckstorg childcare center. The latter are within a radius of 600 meters from the accident site that has been established and will be closed for the rest of the day.

Several other buildings in what is described as a risk zone have been evacuated, either on their own initiative or after contacting the rescue service or the police. Torpaskolan and a preschool next door have also been evacuated, according to the police at the initiative of the principal.

Car and train traffic affected

Munkebäcksmotet at E20 has been closed all morning, as well as all access roads to Sävenäs. According to the police, an area about 600 meters from the crash site was closed. Police anticipate that it will be a long time before the roadblocks are lifted.

All train traffic on the western main line is also closed, and the Swedish Transport Administration does not have a forecast when it will be able to resume. Northbound train traffic is also severely affected.
