Several videos are posted on Twitter showing open flames and a huge plume of smoke rising into the sky.

According to information from the Lebanese army, he is burning in a warehouse that stores oil and tires, not far from the site of the explosion a month ago, local media report.

Now the streets are being emptied and people are urged to leave the area. The army is closing all roads near the port so that rescue vehicles can work undisturbed. Military helicopters have been taken in to assist the rescue service in firefighting.

– This causes panic and people evacuate from this area. It’s empty here now, Al Jazeera reporter Zeina Khodr says in a live broadcast.

According to the Lebanese Red Cross, there should be no victims. It is not yet clear what caused the fire.

– I am not responsible for the port of Beirut and that is beyond my powers. We are now working to control the fire and I urge residents not to go near the area, Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud told Al-Jadeed.

Since the big explosion in Beirut a month ago, extensive rescue and clean-up work has been carried out in the port and around the city.
