Mexico reports an excess mortality rate of about 123,000 people from mid-March to early August.
The excess mortality is calculated based on the national average for the years 2015-2018. The authorities point out that there are other causes of death in addition to covid-19 in excess of mortality, but Ricardo Cortés Alcalá, general director of the Mexican Public Health Agency, admits that Mexico has been greatly affected by the pandemic.
– When a new biological component is transferred from animals to humans, it will always result in more cases of disease, which we now see clearly, as well as excess mortality, he says.
As of early August, just over 47,000 deaths had been linked to the pandemic, so the figures give an indication that the number of COVID deaths in the country could be much higher. Since August, the death toll has risen to more than 67,000.
In total, about 630,000 people have been confirmed infected in Mexico, but even that number is probably much higher according to authorities.
