Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S) gives a digital press conference in Rosenbad.

The government wants everyone to avoid the gathering of more than eight people.

– Do your duty and assume your responsibility to stop the spread of the infection, says Prime Minister Stefan Löfven (S).

The government is concerned about the increasing spread of the infection and is concerned that the risk of infection is not taken seriously by many.

Therefore, public events and public gatherings with more than eight people should now be banned. Today the limit is 50.

The amendment to the ordinance, which is based on the Public Order Law, will take effect on November 24 and will run for four weeks.

– This is a very intrusive measure, but absolutely necessary, says Löfven.

– More prohibition is needed to reduce the curve on the number of infected.

No artists

Another forceful measure that the government is now announcing is that the relay is removed for restaurants with artists who entertain diners.

Since October 8, these restaurants have had a seated audience that exceeds the audience limit. But as of November 24 it will be practically impossible to invite diners to live music, since then only eight people will be able to attend.

This is the third tightening of restaurant rules announced in a short time. No more than eight people are allowed to sit at the same table. And last week, the government proposed to stop serving alcohol in the pub after 10 p.m.

Can not prohibit

The government hopes that the new bans, which include, for example, demonstrations, religious gatherings, cultural and sporting events, will cause the whole of society to follow suit.

However, it is not possible to prohibit, for example, private parties and large private dinners. Or close all gyms.

Löfven still hopes that the eight-person limit will become the “new norm.”

– It is a very clear signal for all the people of our country and for the whole society, says Löfven.

Preferably, he wants you to completely avoid activities in which you meet many other people.

– Don’t go to the gym, don’t go to the library, don’t have parties. Cancel. Don’t invent evasions that would make your activity good, says Löfven.

Christmas is canceled?

It is not yet clear if the “new rule” also means that you must cancel the holiday celebration with family and friends who are not part of the same household.

The director general of the Swedish Public Health Agency, Johan Carlson, says that they are looking at these problems at the moment and that the information will arrive a bit in December.

– On the one hand we want to leave early, and on the other hand we want to leave so late that the evaluations we do are applicable during Christmas, he says.

The infection situation has deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks.

As recently as October 22, the government decided exceptions to audience restrictions for, for example, theaters, concerts, cinemas, and sporting events that have seats. In such cases, up to 300 people could be allowed with a certain distance between them.

But that exception has not been used as the regions of the country have chosen to keep a maximum of 50 people. That ceiling has now been lowered from 50 to eight people.
