Pastor Tobias Unnerstål (left) has been in conversation with police since the Catholic Church in Gothenburg was vandalized. Among other things, hymn books have been thrown on the ground.

Gothenburg’s Catholic Church has been vandalized.

– It was unpleasant. Such is the scope, you end up in some kind of shock, Pastor Tobias Unnerstål tells TT.

It was on Friday, just after lunch, that someone or some entered the church. Everything on the altar was knocked down, the chair where the priest usually sits was overturned and the hymn books were thrown to the ground.

– It could be someone who has had an outbreak. But there are some things that indicate that there is an anger behind us, especially that everything that was on the altar has worn away, says the pastor.

In the Catholic tradition, the altar is an important place and the objects found there are revered with respect.

– The altar does not touch anyone but the priest. It makes a deep impression on us as believers, says Tobias Unnerstål.

Police were called to the church and a vandalism report was made.

– But the church has not received threats or letters, says Christer Fuxborg, police spokesman.

Max Skalenius saw some people enter the church when he had just left.

– But it’s not certain that they are. A man was the last I saw enter. But it could also have been a woman who arrived just before. I have provided information to the police, he says.

Inside the church, a chapel, a memorial site for those who died during the year, has also been vandalized. Members of the congregation can go to pray for their dead relatives and light candles. Now the whole place is sprayed with a fire extinguisher.

– He felt completely disrespectful, says an annoying Tobias Unnerstål.
