Göteborg FC, who became Swedish champions for the first time in November, surprisingly shut down their elite operations a few days before New Years, only to announce two days later that they will continue, in a different way.

When we become part of the Häcken family, we simultaneously guarantee quality and the future and offer our players fantastic opportunities and conditions to develop. I’m proud and happy that hopefully we can take this step in just a couple of weeks, Bronsman says in a press release.
Earlier this week Sources within BK Häcken confirmed to DN that talks about the merger were ongoing within the club’s leadership. On Wednesday, the club announced that the board views a merger positively and that the question will now be asked at a further annual meeting on January 27.
Häcken president Anders Billström says it is to anticipate events to say that the merger is ready and notes that club members should have their say. He perceives the attitude as positive among Häcken members, both women and men.
– For us on the board, it has been important that our current women’s team feel that this is good and believe in this. If they hadn’t, it wouldn’t have raised the issue, Billström tells DN.
The plan is for the team to play in Division 2 next season. However, it is not entirely clear whether the Allsvenskan team will also play under the name BK Häcken this year.
According to Billström There are two clear reasons why Häcken wants to take over the Swedish champion. The aim of the club is to have teams on top of the Swedish for both women and men. Just as important is “saving” elite women’s football in Gothenburg, now under threat.
– Many people see this with women’s football as a losing business. I see the opposite. We will be as strong on that side as we are among the men and a lot is happening on the women’s side right now, says Billström, who points out that there are many problems left to be solved, for example around sponsors.
It says Peter Bronsman, who is the main owner of the Kopparbergs Brewery and is said to have sponsored Gothenburg with around 100 million over the years, will not have a seat on Häcken’s board of directors. However, he seems willing to stay as a sponsor.
– It’s clear that we had an argument and I really hope he wants that. I know he has received criticism, but he has done a lot for this association, says Billström.
After the shock message before the new year, several clubs were associated with the CCI. First, Örgryte said no. Subsequently, IFK Gothenburg also announced that the merger that was discussed two years ago was also not relevant. Therefore, only BK Häcken was really left as a reasonable alternative.
On Thursday morning, the Swedish champions do their first training session before the new season. It will take place in the old local stadium Valhalla IP. In the future, it will likely take place at Häcken’s modern training facility, Gothia Park.
