Gold does not save the economy from a crown season

During the crown season without crowds, the men’s Swedish football clubs are bleeding and Malmö FF is still waiting for the club to get a negative result of approximately SEK 50 million. Despite the fact that on Sunday MFF secured the gold of the Swedish Championship via 4-0 at home against Sirius.

– The gold of the Swedish Championship in itself does not generate much income, but we have the opportunity to play in the Champions League and we know what it can give. says MFF’s in Niclas Carlnén.

You can qualify for the new tournament

MFF has reached four group matches in the Champions League (2014, 2015) and Europa League (2018, 2019) in recent years and now has around SEK 500 million in the bank. For next season, the club team tournaments in Europe will be remade and only the Swedish champion team will be able to reach the finals of the Champions League and Europa League.

The other three Swedish clubs will qualify for the new Europa Conference League (ECL) tournament, so it was very important to win the Swedish Championship gold this year.

– Very important. Even before, the only possibility was to get into the Champions League and win the title. We have done it several times and we must continue to do so to have the level of ambition that we have. And our goal is to be able to establish ourselves in Europe and then the condition is that we win the Allsvenskan as often as possible, says Carlnén.

Although the ECL is not expected to provide as many millions as the two big tournaments, Carlnén emphasizes that the tournament is important.

“Great alternative”

– It’s a great alternative and that’s where most of the Swedish teams will be. It will give us (the Swedish clubs) more experience and more ranking points as a nation, which may lead us to an easier path to the Champions League and the Europa League, he says.

Malmö is trying to plan its budget over a three-year period, but it is difficult to predict what 2021 will be in light of the pandemic.

– It is very difficult for us to look towards 2021. Will we have an audience on April 1 when the series begins? We do not know. There are too many questions to be able to say right now what risks there are next season, says Niclas Carlnén.

Starting next season, there will be three club team tournaments under the auspices of UEFA: Champions League (CL), Europa League (EL) and Europa Conference League (ECL).

Each tournament will consist of 32 clubs in the group stage. The new tournament structure applies through the 2023–2024 season.

The Swedish champions will qualify for the Champions League and, as before, four doubles matches must be won to reach the group stage. In the event of a defeat in the CL qualifier, the champion team may continue in the EL qualifier or the ECL qualifier, depending on the CL qualifying round in which it is eliminated.

The winners of the second and third Allsvenskan cups this fall and next year will qualify for the ECL. All three teams enter qualifying round 2. Three qualifying stages (doubles) must be won to reach the group stage.

To get more qualifiers for Europe, Sweden must advance to the top 15 in the UEFA national rankings. Then the Allsvenskan runner-up will also qualify for the Champions League and the cup winner will qualify for the Europa League. This location also means that the third and fourth Allsvenskan can qualify for the ECL.

Sweden is currently ranked 21st. This summer Djurgården, Malmö FF, Hammarby and IFK Gothenburg participated in the knockout rounds, but neither team made it to group matches.
