It was FC Rosengård in great shape that came into play when Umeå visited Malmö IP on Sunday afternoon.
The reigning champions had four consecutive wins in their luggage and when they stepped out onto the artificial turf to consolidate their leadership in the league, they did so in a new pink uniform, symbolic of their commitment to the fight against cancer and collaboration with the Pink Ribbon of the Cancer Foundation.
Before the game, Ali Riley told Sydsvenskan how he was in Sweden when his mother contracted cancer for the second time.
– Anyone can get it, no one can prepare and it affects so many. She had surgery and I went home to America. I saw how he fought. I want more people to experience that cancer can be controlled. My mother has done it twice. We were lucky. Now it’s as if it didn’t happen. But she eats tablets every day, it is a reminder.
Pink october
The club will play in pink throughout the “pink month” of October.
At table seven Umeå, on the other hand, played with a knife to his throat, the team needs to score points to secure Damallsvensk’s game next season.
In the opening minutes, the team traded chances, but then Rosengård took the lead with increasing force. However, there were no goals in the first half.
They played on 30 August in the away game against Eskilstuna, but Mimmi Larsson’s thigh injury was already the previous game against Gothenburg FC.
The national team forward had been out of the game for nearly a month when she and Riley were substituted in the 58th minute of the game. A couple of minutes later, arranging star Caroline Seger walked in.
But the changes didn’t help much.
Offensive locomotive Jelena Cankovic was forced to get down tightly wrapped around the thigh and at the same time it was also clear that Kopparbergs / Göteborg were leading 2-0 against Piteå. Rosengård needed to win to keep the advantage of the table intact and bet everything forward, but the goals were not lost.
Rescue score
– Right now it feels heavy. We are not reaching the level at the same time that Umeå is doing well. Now is the time to dig deeper and see what we can do better, says Larsson.
In the 90th minute, Rosengård’s Anna Anvegård had an excellent chance to score yet another goal for the visitors, sending a volley shot from the right, but Agnes Granberg was vigilant, deflecting the ball for a corner.
– He felt calm and we never stressed. So it’s always fun to make stops at the end, says the match hero.
– We focus on keeping the defense together and we communicate well and a lot. We had also looked at how we could harm them, and I think we did pretty well with that too.
The match ended 0-0 and there is now only one point difference between league leaders Rosengård and runners-up Gothenburg.
