On Monday, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo became the first in the world to receive a dose of vaccine administered through the Covax global vaccine program.
“It is important that you show that this vaccine is safe by being the first to take it, so that everyone in Ghana can feel safe taking it,” the 76-year-old president said before receiving a syringe on live television. With Astra Vacuna from Zeneca.

The country of 30 million people has received 600,000 doses through Covax, which will help poor countries obtain vaccines. The program has been dragged down by delays and funding problems.
According to the plan, approximately 340 million doses of vaccine should have been delivered to some 145 countries by mid-year. However, it is enough to vaccinate just over three percent of the inhabitants of those countries.
Ghana’s Medicines Agency has also approved the Russian Sputnik V vaccine. The country aims to reach 20 million people per vaccine by the end of the year.
