Opposition leader Alexei Navalny fell ill during a trip to Siberia and was transferred to Berlin, Germany, for treatment.

Tests analyzed in a military laboratory have established that Navalny was exposed to a neurotoxin from the Novitjok group. The German government writes in a press release.

The same poison was used to poison former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Julia Skripal at British Salisbury 2018.

Diplomatic sanctions

Chancellor Heiko Maas says Germany is not averse to imposing diplomatic sanctions on Russia, reports the AFP news agency.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has called it an assassination attempt and demands that Russia explain itself.

“Only Russia can and must answer these serious questions,” he said during a press conference earlier this week.

Prime Minister: “The Russian state has answers to give.”
