Gerhard Richter is one of the most influential artists in the world and also one of the most appreciated. Stock Photography.
The 89-year-old artist’s donation takes the form of a long-term loan to the Museum der Moderne, which is currently under construction in the German capital.
The “Birkenau” suite is the culmination of many decades of Richter’s attempts to create works based directly on the Holocaust. None of the works in the series have been put up for sale on an art market that otherwise pays many millions for the artist’s works.
– It was clear to me that I can’t sell Birkenau paintings and I don’t want to either, says Richter in an interview with Deutschlandfunk.
The Museum der Moderne won’t open until 2027 at the earliest, but starting in 2023, Richter’s donation will have a temporary home at Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie.
