Three people suspected of being involved in the Rwandan genocide have been arrested and prosecuted in Belgium.

Two men were arrested in Brussels on Tuesday and the third in Hainault on Wednesday. All three have been accused of serious human rights abuses, said Eric Van Duyse, spokesman for the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office.

It is not clear how the men participated in the genocide. Two of them are in detention and the third is now electronically monitored.

Some 800,000 people died during the genocide in Rwanda in the spring of 1994. The massacres were led by extremist nationalists from the majority of the Hutu people.
