Five people at the Swedish Social Insurance Agency office in Gävle invested money in how many people would die with covid-19.

One of them was the department head of unit.

– It’s awful. It is an insult to all who have died and been corona sick, says Eva Alner Liljedahl, area manager of Försäkringskassan in Gävleborg.

On a 14-hour coffee break at the Swedish Social Security Agency office in Gävle, some staff members who were not working from home gathered. Besides having coffee around the coffee table, something else was going on.

The staff bet on how many people would die from the coronavirus and the “winner” received cash from colleagues, something Gefle Dagblad was able to reveal first.

– I think it’s basically tacky. But when we work with what we do, I think it gets even worse, says an anonymous insider.

According to the witness, who works in the department in question, one of those involved in the betting must have been the head of the department.

– We had a great staff meeting. At the meeting, one person admitted to participating in gambling. And that was our unit manager.

Now months of basic work await everyone in the department where the bets were placed.

– It really seems that those who participated in this may need an in-depth study of our values. But for the rest of us, it will be like collective punishment, says the source.

The head of unit participated

Eva Alner Liljedahl is Area Director of the Swedish Social Security Agency in Gävleborg. She says the bets had time to last a week.

– It started with two people involved in this during the first week of December. During the week, it grew and a total of five people participated, he says.

You can also confirm that the Head of Unit was one of those who participated in the bet.

– That person was involved for a total of a day and a half before the person stopped this. “I’ve had several investigative conversations with the unit manager, but this is a personnel matter and I can’t say much more than that,” says Eva Alner Liljedahl.

The five people who bet on the death toll must be deeply sorry.

“A pure insult”

Eva Alner Liljedahl strongly distances herself from what happened and says the incident does not reflect authority.

– It’s awful. It is an insult to all who have died and been corona sick. We in authority have been very affected and I understand that if you as a citizen get angry and sad about this, he says.

An infringement report has been submitted to internal investigators at the Swedish Social Security Agency. The registration should now be allowed to proceed within the authority. But what awaits department employees is to work on the agency’s values, for most of 2021.

– All members of the department may attend this training. But we will have deep values-based work with the five people who participated in the bets, says Eva Alner Liljedahl.
