Now the captain of the England team talks about Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood.
– I don’t understand how the players could think it was acceptable, says Gareth Southgate.
On Tuesday night, England played 0-0 in the away game against Denmark, without sending off Phil Foden, 20, and Mason Greenwood, 18.
The duo were sent home after having girls in their Reykjavik hotel room, despite the soccer association’s strict quarantine rules. Federation Captain Gareth Southgate spoke on Monday, calling it a dire situation.
“He had been sent home regardless”
After Tuesday’s League of Nations game, the incident resurfaced:
– I don’t understand how the players could think it was acceptable. For me it is a mystery. From what has emerged since Monday, the players had been sent home regardless. Everyone should understand that this is not tolerated during our collections, says Southgate according to The Guardian.
Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood were sent home from the national team collection.
Tottenham star, also England team captain Harry Kane has also heard from both players.
– I’m convinced they would have liked to undo it. I’ve messed with both. He didn’t want them to feel alone. They are aware of their mistake. They are young and inexperienced, and it won’t happen again, he says.
“I shouldn’t have played”
The Premier League season starts on Saturday and the captain of the national team, Gareth Southgate, does not think that the Nations League matches should have been played. He considers that the form and physical capacity of the players were not optimal because the soccer league has not started yet.
– We shouldn’t have played. It doesn’t work for clubs and it doesn’t work for the national team, Southgate says.
In addition to the hotel scandal after the meeting with Iceland in Reykjavik (1-0 win), Atlético de Madrid’s Kierian Trippier collided with Danny Ings in training on the eve of the game against Denmark. Trippier played 0-0 in Copenhagen with a black eye.
