Defense Secretary Benny Gantz and his Blue and White Alliance say they are ready to topple the coalition government with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud party and vote to dissolve the Israeli parliament.
If the threats are finally carried out, Israel appears to be forced to participate in the fourth election in less than two years. The current government was sworn in in May.
Gantz is angry that Netanyahu has refused to approve the two-year budget included in the coalition agreement.
According to the defense minister, his party will support a vote on Wednesday launched by the opposition in the Knesset to dissolve parliament.
The vote is preliminary and two more are required before a new election can be called.
Gantz can still imagine sitting on the boat if Netanyahu backs down and a budget has been approved by December 23, reports the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
Netanyahu says the corona pandemic and the country’s security policy challenges speak against a new election.
Gantz, on the other hand, says that Netanyahu is politically arrogant and procrastinated to avoid being convicted of the corruption crimes he was charged with in court.
