Gaming companies warn of reduced sponsorship after government gambling proposals

The government’s proposal for temporary regulation It is based on a concern about a major gambling problem caused by the crown crisis. The proposal includes, among other things, a deposit limit of SEK 5000 per week per account.

“This is a way of protecting vulnerable consumers and ensuring that people who are at risk of gambling and abuse problems are protected in this situation,” said Minister of Civil Affairs Ardalan Shekarabi (S) regarding the press conference at which the proposal was presented.

Per Carlander at Unibet believes the proposal will have a negative effect, both for people with a gaming addiction and for the Swedish sports movement.

– We have seen a market that has shrunk in Sweden since 2019 due to restrictions that exist, and now there are more restrictions that are severe. It will mean less revenue for companies with a Swedish license and it will also mean less money to return to the sport, he says and continues:

– The top earners will be Swedish unlicensed companies, companies that don’t deal with their troublesome players and have little consumer protection.

There is no clear increase in game problems

The Gaming Inspectorate tells SVT Sport that some companies increased sales during the month of March, but some gaming companies have not seen any increase in gaming issues.

– What worries me a lot is that the work seems to rest on questionable grounds. We have seen very few facts that build the argument. What we see is that we have no major problems with the game, says Carlander.

“I’m worried”

Several Swedish licensed gaming companies sponsor Swedish sports and one such example is Unibet, which sponsors All Swan, Superetta and Hockey All Swan. They believe that this type of sponsorship may be difficult in the future if the temporary regulation goes into effect.

– I am concerned that if the gaming market continues to decline, there will be much less money for sports in the future.

Can you say that you are now speaking on your own?

– I understand them, but the important thing is to think about the consequences that this can have in the second and third stages. It is important to look up and understand that this does not only affect the gaming companies themselves. This will also have a great impact on sport.

Swedish games not worried

However, not all game companies share Unibet’s concerns. Svenska Spel, who, like Unibet, is a major sports sponsor in Sweden, is an example of this.

– As it stands now, we don’t see this message having a direct impact on our commitment to the sports movement, says Communications Director Joakim Mörnefelt.
