So it is this weekend that Gais will hold his cup with young people from (almost) the whole country, something like Göteborgs-Posten first spoken. Infection control doctors are concerned.
The pattern that we have seen for some time is that young people are the first to get infected.
– They rarely get seriously ill, but can contribute to the widespread spread of infection in society. Because then it increases with age when they infect their relatives and other people. Then medical staff and nursing home staff get sick and then it gets really serious, says infection control doctor Leif Dotevall in Gothenburg.
Can not prohibit
But infection control doctors have no legal opportunity to ban the cup.
– No, we can only advise. I don’t really want to comment on individual glasses, but several of them have already been canceled after consulting with us and the Public Health Agency, says Leif Dotevall.
He talks about big tournaments and cups like the Gothia Cup, the Gothia Floorball Cup, the Partille Cup, the World Youth Games and the Basketball Festival. To name a few.
Skånelag must not come
Roland Blomstrand is the vice president of Gais and the person responsible for the cup. He says the Skåne county administrative board, as recently as Tuesday afternoon, issued new directives, meaning Gais today declined to participate from sixteen Skåne teams.
– We said you are welcome next year. So now it has been reduced from 120 teams to about one hundred, spread over various locations. Our cup is quite small, actually eight mini cups in one. It is not about thousands of participants, he emphasizes.
Safe mug
Gais has been preparing for a long time for the mug to hold as securely as possible.
– And in the last few days, we’ve done additional things to make the mug safe, says Roland Blomstrand.
But canceling completely is not relevant.
– We intend to implement this. We can’t do much more at this late stage when people are more or less on their way here, he says.
It has been said that Gais cannot afford to cancel the cup, and that this is the real reason it is taking place. But Roland Blomstrand denies it.
– We do not carry out the cup out of greed on our part, but because of practical circumstances. It is difficult for us to have an overview of what would happen if we canceled the cup two days before. But the payoff is not particularly great for us. he says.
A little later could Göteborgs-Posten tell him that the cup does not yet have permission from the police to organize a public meeting. Roland Blomstrand tells the newspaper that they had not needed such permission before.
