It was at the end of April when President Bolsonaro fired police chief Maurício Valeixo and nominated his family friend Alexandre Ramagem as the new head of the federal police. He urged the country’s Minister of Justice, Sérgio Moro, to resign in protest and make accusations against the president about political participation in the work of the federal police.
Ramagem’s appointment was put on hold, following a Supreme Court decision, due to ties to the Bolsonaro family.
The investigation that has now begun is directed in two directions: first, the president will be investigated and, secondly, Moro, and whether his charges should be considered slander.
The work now continues to gather evidence and listen to witnesses to clarify the case, which will be presented in a report to the prosecutor, who then decides whether the prosecution should be brought against either party.
If the Supreme Court finds sufficient evidence against the president, the prosecution must be approved by a two-thirds majority in the House, 342 votes out of a total of 513, for the trial to begin.
