Pumpkins grown in Sweden will also be available in stores this crown year. But will they go together? Stock Photography.
The fact that large entertainment facilities cancel their Halloween parties has not hurt the nation’s pumpkin growers. On the contrary, the demand is so high that some fear the lack of pumpkins for the next celebration.
– Right now the stores are buying and there is a desire to do so.
Agneta Svensson, who grows eight hectares of Halloween pumpkins and eight hectares of food and decoration pumpkins on the Scanian Bjäre peninsula, is optimistic. Although the crown affects our celebrations, she is convinced that consumers will also buy a pumpkin for Halloween this year.
– People want to gild life.
Goes to smaller pumpkins
The country’s largest pumpkin producer, Leif Nilsson in Löderup in Skåne, also believes that demand appears to be normal. Around 1,800 tons of pumpkins, from Halloween pumpkins to delicate pumpkins like hokkaido and butternut, are now hitting stores across the country.
– Then it goes to smaller sizes. We noticed, maybe it is due to small homes, says Leif Nilsson and continues:
– When it started, the Halloween pumpkin would be as big as possible. Now it should be smaller, and weigh between three and eight kilos.
But this year there have been some changes.
– We delivered to Gröna Lund last year and it is closed. But we have the Skåne Zoo, they take pumpkins.
Thousands of unsold pumpkins
Entertainment facilities like Liseberg in Gothenburg and Gröna Lund in Stockholm canceled their Halloween celebrations due to the pandemic, something that put pumpkin grower Magnus Magnusson in Mellby, outside Laholm, on the glue. Because when Liseberg announced that the amusement park was closed due to the crown, he suddenly had a large quantity of thousands of unsold pumpkins. But the situation has been resolved.
Yes, it became a media thing, so it has worked fantastically well. Many have heard of him: municipalities, real estate companies and individuals who have bought the pumps, he says when TT calls.
The crop, consisting of 200 tons of pumpkins this year, has been so extensive that Magnus Magnusson even believes there may be a shortage of pumpkins this fall.
– I understand that perception. Many have heard of my regular contacts among wholesalers and are now chasing pumpkins.
Harvest party canceled
More flags for possible shortages. Pumpkin grower Jonas Nilsson in Öland has grown Halloween pumpkins as usual this year, but chose this spring to hold back a bit on planting the smaller decorations and food bombs.
The cause? Concerns about changing sales opportunities.
– With the result in hindsight, it may not have reduced that much, he says and explains that there is consumer demand despite the fact that the big harvest festival in Öland has been canceled this year. Work is now underway to ensure that all Halloween bombs reach Skåne wholesalers.
– It’s as usual, it’s a full island. We pack as much as we can and I have orders for all of my pumpkins.
