Images of the massive landslide in Norway’s Gjerdrum show a stationary car, right at the edge of the cliff. It was in him that the four friends traveled when the ground gave way.
– We only see that the road bends in front of us. Breaks. At first we don’t really understand what it is, but then we see that it’s a hole in the ground, 19-year-old Edvard Fiskum tells Dagbladet.
“Everyone was completely hysterical”
By cross braking, the friends managed to avoid the cliff. From there, they saw people coming out of the surrounding houses.
– They had just run away with almost no clothes on. Everyone was completely hysterical and just tried to get as far away as possible. We tried to help them with jackets and things like that, the ones they didn’t wear as much, Bendik Andersen, 19, tells the newspaper.
The boys helped stop other cars heading into the avalanche. They describe how some were left in shock after seeing their homes destroyed.
At the same time, they were about to be shot down.
– It’s a bit scary when you see that the landslide has curved around the car and was lost for a couple of meters. It’s scary to think we were there yesterday, Even Nygaard Østreng tells Dagbladet.
Ten people are missing
On Thursday, ten people are still missing after the landslide. Among them are a two-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl.
Ten other people are injured, one of them seriously.
– We are continuing the full-force rescue operation, says task force leader Roger Pettersen at a press conference Thursday afternoon.
