Closed bars and restaurants in Marseille and shorter opening hours in Paris are part of the new restrictions in France, as the spread of the infection resumes. The measures arouse anger and protests are scheduled for Friday.

– There is no doubt that you will suffer the consequences of these measures, admits Prime Minister Jean Castex during a conversation with the owner of a restaurant in a report on the television channel France 2.

This week, the government announced a series of new measures to try to curb the spread of the infection. Marseille now has the “maximum alert”, the highest alert level, while authorities use the next highest to describe the situation in Paris and ten other cities.

This means that public gatherings in all those cities have been limited to 10 people and 1,000 at major sporting or cultural events.

In Marseille, all bars and restaurants are also forced to close. In the capital and the other ten cities, including Bordeaux and Lyon, restaurants must close earlier.

The mayor of Marseille says indignantly that the government did not consult her before deciding on the strict restrictions, and points to the measures taken locally.

– Why tighten the screws now that our numbers have improved in recent days? Michele Rubirola tells Franceinfo.

Bar and restaurant owners, as well as other merchants in Marseille, are planning protests against the new measures on Friday.
