Fredrik Reinfeldt: America is at risk of becoming a dictatorship

Former Prime Minister and moderate leader Fredrik Reinfeldt describes in his new book “On November 3, 2020 The Choice of Fate: On a Dangerous Democracy and a Disintegrating World Order” the tense situation in the United States before the elections of this fall. There he expresses great concern for President Donald Trump.

– He is like no other president before him in that he pushes borders and does not respect the balance that must exist between the different institutions, he says in SVT’s Morgonstudion.

– At the beginning of his first term, there were restrictive forces, old seasoned Republicans who were able to contain some of his temperament. But they don’t stay now. And I’m convinced he’s angrier now than four years ago and runs it more like a family business.

“A democracy in danger”

According to Fredrik Reinfeldt, Donald Trump also runs the risk of affecting the balance of power in the world.

-I think the risk is that it will be more corrupt and that it will be more to bring down a world order that has consisted a lot in the United States taking responsibility for certain values, he says.

Should we view the United States as a dictatorship if it continues?

– I mean that they are a democracy in danger, he says.

– It has shown that it does not respect the legal system, attacks the judicial system, criticizes judges, harasses witnesses, does not respect freedom of expression, does not respect free and independent media, attacks individual journalists. It’s pretty clear that he mixes his personal and family finances with the public sector, says Fredrik Reinfeldt.

Great twist

Fredrik Reinfeldt also points out that there are former Republican forces, the “Lincoln Project,” who do not want Donald Trump to be re-elected. Including the Bush families.

But he is democratically elected. Before the pandemic broke out, unemployment figures were also at a good level in the US and the economy was doing quite well. That’s what matters most to people, right?

– Absolutely. But now it has taken a big turn. At the beginning of the year it was debated that he would be re-elected. The economy was strong and has been for many years. But now it will be more of a feedback on how it goes with respect for the ethnic diversity that exists, how the pandemic is managed and what are the tools to really get the United States out of the pandemic, he says in Morgonstudion.
