Freddy Adu, one of America’s best-known footballers, will play for Österlen FF next year.
An opportunity Adu saw by pure chance, he says on a Blue Wire podcast.
– I don’t normally check my private messages, he says.
Freddy Adu was one of America’s most prominent soccer talents. He was described as a prodigy, the future of football and when he was 14 he won millions of crowns in football and his endorsement deals.
But then it didn’t become much more than that. And when Freddy Adu was fired from his last club, he did not see that his career was over, but it was not clear to him when and when he would play football again.
But then something happened.
“The message at the top was from Österlen FF”
– I don’t usually check my private messages on social networks, I get a lot, he says in the podcast “American Prodigy: Freddy Adu”, by Grant Wahl for Blue Wire Podcasts and continues:
– But then I checked one day and the message at the top came from Österlen FF. They asked if they could call me.
– And then they made me an offer that I couldn’t refuse.

Sports director Malik Sesaj sat on the other side of the screen and wrote with Adu.
– It was just a little loose talk at first, but it quickly turned into something serious. He answered and we switched phone numbers and then he was driving. He is very positive about this and very grateful that we gave him the opportunity, he told Sportbladet previously.
“He wants to revive his career”
The news of Adu’s recruitment came in mid-October.
According to sporting director Malik Sesaj, Österlen FF’s offer to Adu is not about large sums of money.
– It’s more about him wanting to have this opportunity and relive his career. He wasn’t looking for imaginary money at all, Malik Sesay told Sportbladet at the time.
The club is investing heavily to get to Superettan and the hope is that hiring the American profile will contribute to increased interest in the club.
