The French government wants to extend the health emergency that gives the government of President Emmanuel Macron extended powers in the fight against the spread of the infection in two months, until July 24.
According to public utility company RFI, the emergency gives the government the opportunity to, among other things, restrict freedom of assembly and freedom of movement, and forcibly requisition goods and services from private companies.
The emergency went into effect on March 24 and would have lasted until the end of May. But eliminating the emergency would be “premature” and could present a risk that the outbreak will worsen, says Health Minister Olivier Veran.
Parliament will decide on the government’s request to extend the emergency on Monday.
At the same time, the country plans to gradually ease broad restrictions starting May 11.
France had reported more than 167,000 confirmed cases of coronary infection on Saturday and around 24,500 died.
