Hong Kong has been hit by a fourth corona wave.
Now experts are investigating whether the virus may have become more aggressive as more young people become seriously ill.
When the virus outbreak first spread in Wuhan in January, tough measures were put in place to stop the spread, something that appears to have paid off, with death and infection rates declining according to NBC, among others.
According to local media, life is now more or less the same as before the pandemic in China. Images showing festivals and sporting events with thousands of participants have flourished in the world media. It is different in the Hong Kong region in the southern parts of the country.
This is because the population is in a fourth wave of viruses, with increasing infection rates, reports Time magazine, among others. The new wave, which is estimated to have started in early December, is believed to have accelerated through, among other things, dance events.
Hong Kong’s fourth wave is hitting a new group of people harder than under previous peaks.
More middle-aged people are now fighting the virus for their lives compared to previous viral outbreaks, an analysis of hospital data shows.

Faster and sicker
The rise in hospitalized covid patients is now also happening faster than before, reports the South China Morning Post. During the first twelve days of December, the number increased by just over a third, from 812 patients to 2,118, but the number of seriously ill patients increased fivefold, from 21 to 110.
In hospitals, more people aged 20 to 49 are now being cared for, compared with the third wave that authorities estimate took place at the end of the month between July and August.
The sudden death of a previously healthy 42-year-old woman from covid-19 has caused concern to spread in Hong Kong, and health authorities have issued a warning to the young and middle-aged.
According to Dr. Kenny Chan King-chung, on the health authority’s intensive care coordinating committee, patients are now also arriving in more critical condition and demanding immediate respiratory assistance to a greater extent than before.

Quarantined room visitors
Medical experts will now investigate whether the fourth wave virus has changed in any way and become more aggressive, because it seems to strongly affect even the youngest age groups.
At the same time, mandatory testing and quarantine are being introduced for people who have stayed in places that have been singled out for outbreaks, including department stores, beauty salons and construction sites.
This week, all customers who visited a luxury salon in central Hong Kong were ordered to isolate themselves, as several members of the salon staff were found to be infected.
Although Hong Kong is experiencing a fourth wave, the numbers are still very low compared to other countries and regions.
A total of 7,800 cases have been confirmed and 123 people have died with Covid-19, in a population of approximately 7.5 million people.
